BATS: Bringing Back the Bats

The Documentary
The educational documentary portion of this episode truly sheds a light on these mysterious, dark creatures. Bats are one of the most misunderstood animals of all time, cloaked in suspicion and viewed with fear. Students learn the facts behind the myths, and are shown the similarities between bats and all mammals; they learn about their natural habitats, and their adopted homes in building and bridges; they learn about their daily lives as bats sleep, feed and raise their young; they learn about bat communication, and the different sounds bats make; and they learn just how important bats are to daily human life by spreading plant seeds, controlling pests, and contributing to many of the products we take for granted today. Most of all, students can see for themselves that bats are cute!

The Animated Adventure
Insect eating bats eat millions of mosquitoes every night. JP Rothbone and his Sniveling Cronies are trying to do away with these bats because sales of their Bug-B-Gone bug zappers are declining swiftly. Batbone and T-Bone race to the bat cave to stop JP before he can harm the bats. Even with all their bungling, the Boneheads save the day, and the bats!
The Newsflash
In this educational documentary segment, students learn about bats’ special ability to use high frequency sound waves to “see” in the dark, using a process called echolocation. Echolocation is explained and animated so students can truly understand this remarkable adaptation. Next, students learn about a serious threat to the northeastern US bat population called “white nose syndrome”.
“You Have the Power” Jingle: Echolocation
This song reinforces the facts learned throughout the show, helping to further dispel the myths surrounding bats. They learn never to touch an injured bat, to get a grown-up to help instead. They learn about “adopting” a bat through Bat World, and about building bat houses to attract these helpful animals into their yards and neighborhoods. And finally, the song teaches more about bats' remarkable ability to “see” sound in the dark: echolocation.
